| Discuss the development of AIDS research >>By Vivian (0610469I) Introduction According to a recent news reported by Channel News Asia on 18 May 2008, the number of people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS positive has increased from 352 in year 2006 to 422 in year 2007 in Singapore. Health ministry encourages people from high-risk groups to go for regular tests, however, many are reluctant to go as it serves as a ‘death sentence’ to them. AIDS have been around for about twenty-seven years since its first detection which was reported in the United States on June 1981. For over 20 years, it has been the subject of arguments and debates among the researchers. Sadly to mention, the number of people suffering from AIDS has been increasing through the years. Nowadays, even with the rapid development of technology and research studies, there is still no cure for AIDS patients. Current treatments can only make the AIDS patients live longer and less the pain they are going through. Many non-funded organizations volunteer work together to create awareness about AIDS, educate the people, provide information on prevention ways, and research on the treatment methods and vaccines. Summary of the Contents from the Resource The question of whether AIDS can be cured or not has been around for many years to date. Although no evident shows that it can be cured in the near future. Scientists and researchers are continuing to work together to achieve the goal of discover a way to save the millions of people life worldwide who are infected with the disease. According to the resource, the first report of AIDS case was on June 1981 in New York City, United States. Since then, many government or non-funded organizations have work together to find a way to cure the disease. Initially, AIDS was named as gay-related immune deficiency or “gay cancer”. This was because cases were happened on the gays. However, as AIDS progresses, women and infants are also infected with the disease. In year 1982, scientists found out the causes for the disease and came out the name acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). By this time, many people have infected with the deadly disease. The source also stated that, during the early days of AIDS pandemic, treatment was confined to palliative care and management of opportunistic infections. Currently, HIV/AIDS is a global catastrophe. However, researches continue to carry out their mission in a hope to achieve their goals. According to the resource, researches on HIV/AIDs have been carrying out heavily from the early detection to today. Researchers are conducting researches on developing and testing preventive vaccines, preventive strategies and new therapeutic treatments for HIV infection and AIDS infections. They also strive to understand better the basic biology of HIV, thus, developing the most effective therapies to treat and control the disease. Risk factors are now clearly defined, this provide the foundation for prevention of the disease. However, rates of HIV/AIDS infections continue to increase. However, there is still no cure for HIV/ AIDS at all. HIV treatment drugs can only lessen the pain the HIV infected person is having, and also help them live longer. The sophisticated highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is considered one of the biggest successes in the industry. However, these drugs and treatments can cause side-effects to the patients. As the resource stated, “the use of antiretroviral therapy is now associated with a series of serious side effects and long-term complications that may have a negative impact on mortality rates. More deaths occurring from liver failure, kidney disease…”. The studies and researches have been developing with many key accomplishments in the industry. And in the areas of prevention, treatment, vaccines and clinical studies. Examples of each of them are respectively, microbicides, protease inhibitors, a DNA vaccine to slow down the disease progress, and rifabutin as a treatment for Mycobacterium avium complex. Research also shows that the research findings and treatments methods also benefit for people with other type of metabolic diseases. One of such example is the introduction of 3TC drug which was developed to treat AIDS is now widely used for chronic hepatits B infection. Personally I feel that even if a patient may live longer with the treatment of HAART, at the same time the patient’s health is also deteriorating as other body functions started to fail. So in the end, it is still killing people. As the resources stated,” While today’s treatments can significantly improve both the length and quality of life for people with HIV/AIDS, they do not represent a cure. Once started, therapy is a lifelong commitment. A cure, if possible, would represent a more sustainable option than costly, complicated, and potentially toxic treatment regimens.” I believe that the best way to stop HIV/AIDS is prevention. As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” Resource used: National Institute of Health, USA. (2006, October). “Fact sheets - HIV/AIDS”. Retrieved May 21, 2008, from World Wide Web: http://www.nih.gov/about/researchresultsforthepublic/HIV-AIDS.pdf Evaluation of the resource I think this site is a trustful website as it is a government founded website. The contents are reliable, because its main purpose is to provide education and research information for the public. Thus, the information on the website is mainly facts or research findings. It allows me to gain insights easily on the subject by categorizing the different parts of the topic. Their focus audience are the public and the researchers. Publics like me can gain a better understanding about the subject. And at the same time, they are also working on the research area, thus they also provide very useful and professional information for the researchers around the world. All in all, the website is well-arranged; contents provided are easy to understand way and it provide ease of navigation. At the same time, I trust the information on the website as it does not contain any biasness. |
