Yee Kiat's Title: Discuss the impact of the Integrated Resort (IR) on Singapore’s tourism industry. (0607015E)

Introduction The integrated resort is of the most upcoming impact on the tourism industry of Singapore where we will be able to enjoy a high return from the tourism sector where together the two integrated resorts will help Singapore in bringing in a total of 17 million of visitors and generate a increase of $30 billion from the tourism sector by the year of 2015.

Summary
When the both the Marina Bay Sands and Resort World at Sentosa start in operation i the year 2010, we will be able to expect a huge number of tourist to be visiting Singapore. The Singapore Tourism Board has projected that there will be an additional 2 to 3 million of visitors which will brings the total number of visitors to about 13 to 14 million. From the rate that it goes, there is a slightly significant 25 per cent increase over the 11 million visitor arrivals projected for the year 2009. With the combined and also increase of staying duration from 2.4 days to 3.6 days in year 2010, this will result in the number of visitors per day to increase by 55% roughly from about 90k in 2006 to 140k in 2010.

Advantages
Besides that, with the conjunction of F&B and Hotels and entertainment sector, this will bring in more revenue and also more tourists in visiting Singapore too. A great number of strength will be needed for the tourism industry where more manpower is needed and also the need for the various positions in the IR itself too. Such it could bring in more revenue and also increased Singapore tourism industry where more are being trained and also hired too.

Disadvantages
However, there are still some disadvantages which had been widely discussed that the IR would bring some gambling problems to the society too. Although the rise in tourism, there might still cause some social problem where Singaporean might plunge into gambling. But still the government will place in some action to prevent that from happening.

Conclusion
In conclusion, I feel that the rise in the tourism industry is sure of a good decision with the building of the IR as it will bring it what it takes to. Problems can be resolved as they are being faced in the future where precautions are set first.

Vino's Title:
Discuss the Impact of Drug / Alcohol Abuse on Youths!

Introduction

Youths all around the world, not just Singapore have been experiencing a rise in the number of youths abusing drugs and alcohol.
Drugs and teens is a very complex and critical issue. Why is there a need for the youths/teens and even adults to take drugs?

First of all, drugs. What are they? They are medicines/ narcotic substances that are suppose to help cure our illnesses. Well then there are those like Marijuana, Heroin and Cocaine. This now becomes a complete new subject.
The overdose and usage of these substances are being termed as the 'Abuse of Drugs'. With the inclusion of alcohol, it introduces a new topic, ' Alcohol Abuse'.
Parents need to understand the reasons why they are taking these drugs so as to help them slowly but surely kill the habit.
In order to ensure that their parents do not suspect what they are talking about, they find words to replace the term drugs. They are called 'Colloquial Names'.

Cocaine is called Coke, Charlie, Snow or White and Crack. Colloquial names are an easy way to disguise talk about drugs amongst teen.

Moving on now, I brainstormed on some risk factors which lead us, youths, into Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Here they are:
Cocaine- Teen sniffing cocaine
Risk Factors

  • Environmental Factors: the readily availability of the substances, constant transition and mobility exposes them to various things and one of the common one is the exposure to drugs and alcohol
  • Family Factors: family history of drug or alcohol abuse, poor parenting practices, ignorance of parents, no signs of showing love, care or concern
  • School Factors: academic failure, little commitment to school
  • Peer Factors: peer rejection, no friends to get along with, friends who use drugs and show favorable attitude towards drug use.
  • Individual Factors: Show no signs of self-control and self -esteem, lack of interest in other things like taking up hobbies, curiosity, influence as all of their friends are using it.

Summary

In my point-of-view, it is really tough to predict the main reason why teens are into these life threatening habits. Each of them have
their own reasons and causes as to why they have become so addicted to drug/alcohol abuse and most of all, even realizing that it is a risky issue, they still choose to prefer to continue the habit.

WHY? Addiction. Once you start, you never stop. Its like a disease spreading all over into your brain telling you that you can't stop.
This is where, parents, friends- good, encouraging ones, teachers(mentors) and counselors play their part. They hold the key in
reforming and taking them to the brighter side by talking them through the situations and bad times. To make things work out easier, the individuals themselves need to realize and understand the consequences that they face if the were to continue the abuse. Hence, both the person affected and person guiding need to have good understanding between each other.

I am sure, there are ways to stop this ever- rising amount of drug abuse by the teens of these century, as they are the one who hold the key to our future!

Evaluation of Internet Resource: http://www.leaderu.com/orgs/probe/docs/drugabus.html

While doing my research on this topic, I came across many various kinds of websites each providing different information. There were sites that contained insufficient content with less relevancy and also others which offered more than what I had asked for.
The resource which I used, definitely belongs to the category which provided more than what I expected. The information in the website was clearly well elaborated and explained in detail.

This part-government / information site not only provides information but it also has guidelines and principles to teach parents on how to cope with their children who suffer from Drug abuse. I must say, I am impressed to find a site with almost complete details on what, where, how and why. It is very rare to find websites which are catering and answering to the exact questions and doubts that we have. I would give this site a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars for the relevancy, content and accuracy of appropriate information.

Shihui Title: Discuss the Impact of Online Gaming on Youths.

Introduction

Nowadays there are more and more youths playing online games. What is online games and how it came about? Online games
are games played over some form of computer network. At the present, this almost always means the Internet or equivalent technology. Online games can range from simple text based games to games incorporating complex graphics and virtual worlds populated by many players simultaneously. Most online games like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI and Lineage II charge a monthly fee to subscribe to their services, while games such as Guild Wars offer an alternative no monthly fee scheme. But there are still people playing these games even though they need to pay a monthly fee. Why is this so? The strategies used to build the games, the graphics, the quality of sound, the interactivity all make them quite irresistible among the younger generation.
Now let me talk about the pros and cons of online gaming on youths.

Pros

  • Games could improve children's logical thinking ability and problem solving skills
  • Educational games help to improve their communication and problem solving abilities.
  • There are improvement in students’ mathematics, spelling and reading amongst children who play these games such asSimCity, Age of Mythology

Cons

  • Possible threat to these frequent gamers, affecting their health such aseye strains, wrist, neck and back pains, photosensitive epilepsy, headaches, hallucinations, nerve and muscle damages etc
  • Youths thatspend too much time playing computer games not only are easily susceptible to long terms problems like bad posture and RSI (repetitive strain injury), but it also causes a disequilibrium in their daily routine
  • Youths will become shy and introvert
  • Games that are violent will cause the gamers do have a tendency to lose control and become more aggressive.
  • Excessive playing of games can actually stunt the growth of a human brain

Conclusion

I believe that online games can help youths to de stress. However, there should be a limit as in when is the appropriate time to play. As long as they know how to cope between games and studies, i think it should be okay. Most importantly, is not to neglect their studies.

Lokman's Title: Discuss the development of Internet Social Network Services

Introduction

Internet Social Network Services now play a very big role in the lives of youth nowadays. From FaceBook to Friendster to MySpace, the tools that the internet provides nowadays allow easy access to friends 24/7 and from every place on available on earth (and even on some parts of outer space near earth!). From the humble beginnings of bulletin boards and newsgroups, Social network Services have grown exponentially to accomodate the masses and help people with the most basic of human needs - the need to keep in touch.

In the early years of internet, bulletin boards and newsgroups ruled the scene with people updating themselves with the latests trends and information by joining newsgroups that send news through the email and gleening of information from bulletin boards. Through the years, the internet users felt the lack of connection between friends to share the information gained, except through email. The interactivity among them was also at a all time low as friends could only write to each other, and the slow response time for each email was hindering them from ever having effective communication. Friends that lived in places far from each other only had email to content with, and wished for technology that would enable them to see the events in their friend's lives instantaneously. Although instant messaging was developed to cater to real-time online communication, it was limited to having the person "online" at that moment of time.

Summary

Internet Social Network Services have grown tremendously in popularity and technology. From being able to post pictures of friends and oneself to engaging in instant messaging, Internet Social networking Services plays a big part in connecting a person to the world. Developments from a certain person's life can be known when he/she writes about it in a personal blog. The person's facial features would always be rememered by that quick browse of the photos uploaded into the site. Certain Internet Social Network Services sites such as FaceBook allow the users to download applications that encourage more interactivity and enjoyment within friends and even family. Quite recently, even MNCs (Multi-national Companies) and government organizations have jumped into the internet social networking bandwagon to increase awareness about their companies and products at the lowest costs possible.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is relatively safe to say that Internet Social Network Services will continue to grow in complexity and popularity. The convenience of connecting with friends by just a click will surely be greatly valued and put to use in the future.

Conclusion

As a teenager myself, its not wrong to follow the music trend but there always a limit to everything. Its never wrong to dress according to one genre, but the violent act of fighting with another type of group that listen to another type of genre is off the limit. Not only that, i personally think that downloading music is wrong. We should all support the band or singer by purchasing their Album. By not downloading, we are actually helping not only the band but Singapore to stop piracy.
